In my paintings I explore space and landscape in relation to natural and man-made catastrophes. I am interested in the moment when one spatial order is replaced by another and a potentially dangerous new reality comes to focus. Unity is cast into doubt as the rules for coherence are undermined. Conflicting fields rub together and show a new and unfamiliar terrain.
My paintings present particular spaces or events occurring among multiple other particular spaces, events, and sensations. There is a sense of doom and optimism in the work as foreboding forms fracture into confetti-like chits and bright colors attempt to gain dominance over dark structures.
The languages of abstraction and surrealism form the art historical basis for the work as rendered strokes meet large gestures. The tropical plants I grew up with in Florida insert themselves as prickly and spiked forms that threaten stability.
